There’s all kinds of advice out there on skin care for the winter months. But if you’re one of those people who can barely get their winter socks off because the fabric is sticking to your dry, flaky, feet, you’ll know that much of that advice, and the products generally recommended, don’t do the trick. Don’t despair; there are solutions, and skin care products, that really can help you avoid those horrible winter feet.
What do you need to keep your feet silky and smooth when the weather is cold, dry and harsh? There’s nothing wrong with the usual recommendations - bathing in warm (not hot) water helps, as does using mild, natural soap that doesn’t contain drying chemicals.
But there are a few absolute musts that make all the difference in the world.
- Do not wear cotton socks. Cotton is a relatively coarse fabric and when you’re wearing cotton socks all day in confined shoes or boots, it can really rough up the skin. Instead, invest in a pair made of silk or bamboo. They’re a little more expensive, but they’re well worth it. They’re so smooth and, well, silky, they don’t snag on skin that’s already a little dry. Silk or bamboo socks are skin care fundamentals any time of year.
- Do not use skin care products with petroleum. Petroleum is touted as locking in moisture. In fact, it prevents the skin from breathing and dries the skin. Your skin may not feel dry, but what you’re feeling isn’t your skin, it’s the petroleum. This advice goes for the entire body, any time of year.
- Do use a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a new layer then locks in natural moisture, keeps out drying chemicals, and protects against harsh, dry weather. Your feet will feel as silky as your new socks. Use it on your hands and face as well.
- Last, but not least, get a pedicure. There’s nothing like a good cleansing, gentle exfoliation and massage to keep the blood circulating and the skin healthy.
If winter skin care has you stumped, give these suggestions a try. But don’t forget the shielding lotion – you’ll notice the difference right away. It’s a must for dry skin care, in every season.
