Core Facts

Stress definitely takes a toll on our appearance and can even accelerate the aging process. A high-profile, stressful job –like being President of the US for instance – apparently doubles the aging process. They say that our President will age two years for every year he's in office. Many people are experiencing a sharp increase in stress due to the current financial crisis, and women are likely to bear the brunt on two counts: our skin tends to age more than men and we worry more than men do about finances. So put stress handling and a good anti-aging skin care routine on your list of to-dos for the New Year.
There are many natural ways to combat stress. Since finances are top of the list of stressors right now, getting your money under control should be your prime target. A change in diet can help too. Concentrate on whole-grains, fruits and vegetables and avoid the refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, junk food and sugar.
Boost your immune system with supplements like Vitamin C to prevent stress related colds and infections. Other antioxidants that defend against stress-related problems are: Vitamin A, beta-carotene, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, and Selenium.
One of the best ways to reduce stress is to exercise regularly. It releases endorphins into the body which helps you relax. And after the indulgence of the holidays, and the fact that stress can cause overeating, exercise will help keep your weight in check too. Find an exercise program that is easy and enjoyable. You’ll be much more likely to stick with it if you’re having fun.
Take time to relax. Treat yourself to an aromatherapy bath or massage once a week to fight stress. Use these relaxing and soothing essential oils: Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Lavender, Marjoram, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Tangerine and Ylang Ylang.
Dermatologists tell us that stress causes cortisol levels to increase within the body and that dry, itchy skin, hives and rashes often break out as a result of stress. And studies have shown that stressed out skin loses its antimicrobial defense mechanism opening the door to infections. Put a shielding lotion on your skin care list for 2009 to combat this stress effect. It will replace the protective layer of your skin and reverse the signs of stress, keeping your skin healthy and supple.
