Many people are looking for non-drug solutions for their skin problems. Natural skin care treatment is better for us but, when the skin condition is very uncomfortable, it’s hard not to seek immediate relief. There are several natural skin care remedies available, including shielding lotion, which is now recommended by thousands of doctors, but when you need a little extra relief, you might also try malva tea. Find out about malva, and what it can do for you.

Malva grows all over the world and has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. It has light pink or purple flowers and blooms in the spring. The word ‘malva’ comes from the Greek and means ‘soothing,’ and the plant is aptly named. Malva tea is used as treatment for a variety of conditions: It’s gargled to reduce irritation and inflammation in the mouth; it’s used as a cough suppressant and expectorant; it helps relieve digestive problems such as stomach upset and intestinal spasms; it alleviates the pain and inflammation of earaches; and, as a skin care treatment, a malva poultice draws toxins from pimples, abscesses and other skin inflammations.

The active ingredients in malva are mucilage, tannins and malvin. The mucilage forms a film over mucous membranes to soothe the area and relieve pain and inflammation much in the same way as honey. The tannins – also found in other teas – are anti-inflammatory, help the healing process, stop infection from spreading, draw out poisons and other irritants, and tighten the pores. Malvin, a red pigment, is known for it’s antioxidant properties.

To use malva tea for skin care, prepare a compress: Add about three teaspoons of malva to boiling water, let it cool just a bit – you want to use it while it’s still quite warm- and use it to soak cotton gauze or pads. You should get some immediate relief.

For all day protection, try a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a new protective layer that locks in natural moisture and keeps out chemicals. Just those actions alone go a long way in healing a skin condition: The skin is actually able to heal itself, but only if it has adequate natural moisture and is protected from household and environmental chemicals and other irritants.

Of the many herbal skin care remedies available, malva is among the most common and effective. Give it a try. But don’t forget the shielding lotion, and always use natural skin care products to help prevent the skin conditions you’re trying to alleviate.
